One important attribute of the Panama is that each hat is unique. The weaving of the Panama hats is a cottage trade activity carried out primarily in the districts of Manabi and Azuay in Ecuador. A craft that has been passed down from generation to generation.
Panama hats vary in the time they take to be woven. Some of the coarser woven hats may take a few hours whereas the finer hats from the towns of Biblian and Montecristi may take up to 5 months to weave, eventually fetching a retail cost of up to $1500. The finest panamas keep a silk, creamy flat composition in which the weave is barely perceptible, but allowing held up to the blaze, a circular of rings will be seen spanning out from the apex of the crown.
These concentric rings or vueltas add up to where fresh strands hold been started in the weaving process. It is the number of vueltas that determines the quality of the Panama. Good luck in your quest to own one... I am sure, one day, you will get one!!
nice hub. i was always wondering where did those hats come from :)
nice hats
And a tip of the hat to you, jonixk, for a very interesting hub. I love hats, although the only ones I wear are golf hats and VFW hats. I used to work at the old Hat Corporation of America in Norwalk, Conn., although I was just a worker, not a mad hatter. It's a shame that hats are no longer common for men. If you watch old films about the time Babe Ruth played baseball for the Yankees you'll see that virtually everyone wore a fedora. Those were the good old days. I have a friend who wears a fedora all the time. That's rare nowadas. Thanks, jonixk, for stirring up old memories.
I can remember my dad wearing a Panama hat to work in the summer and a Stetson or other felt hat in the winter. Now people wear baseball caps, knitted caps or Scottish style tweed hats. I have a hat collection most of which resides in a box in the basement. My prize hats are a lambs wool hat I bought at a famous hat store on Madison Avenue and a rabbit fur "bomber" hat. I wear the lamb's wool hat once in a while when I[m drewsed up on cold days in the winter.
I used to have a straw "boater," but it's disappeared. I'm one of the old fogies who correct people who call "boatsmen" "boaters." I've been known to point out that "boaters" are hats and people who own sail or power boats are "boatsmen."
Lovely hats this one, my boyfriend have one and it's very very beautiful
Hat fan, too - nice hub!
